When Sophisticated projects commissioned us to design this single-family house, the first order of business was to imagine the exposed concrete exterior, its horizontal structure, and how to immerse it in the emerging landscape. However, the challenge was to strike the right balance: not too concrete, so the property would not look cold, or bring too much heat during the summer.
The key was to soften it enough to allow for relaxed Mediterranean living while also reinforcing its cemented base. This involved opening the ground floor into a comfortable living room. We installed wood paneling on the sides, while we left the interioropen for an alfresco dining room and kitchen, separated by three sliding panels, prepared for when the weather turns.
