Nestled in the Son Serralta residential area, in Puigpunyent, this project comprises two single-family homes designed for international clients who chose Mallorca as their new home.

The brief was clear: to create houses that combine contemporary comfort with the authenticity of Mediterranean living.

Set on a south-facing, sloping plot surrounded by native vegetation, the homes overlook a protected valley where no construction is permitted. This privileged setting guided a design that adapts to the topography through a play of split levels, allowing the architecture to blend seamlessly into the Tramuntana landscape.

Local regulations required traditional features such as pitched roofs with Arabic tiles, ochre façades, and wooden shutters. We reinterpreted these elements with a modern sensibility, achieving a result that feels sober, timeless, and honest. Each detail is both aesthetic and functional: the ochre tones help conceal stains from Saharan rains, while the woodwork brings warmth and character.

The material palette reinforces the connection with the island: Zarzi grey limestone, marés sandstone, wood, traditional Mallorcan cement, and dry-stone walls create a natural dialogue with the surroundings while ensuring durability in the local climate.

Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the project, drawing inspiration from vernacular architecture: optimal solar orientation, cross ventilation, high-quality insulation, and the use of local materials are complemented by a landscape design by Cultivos Pima that enhances the native Mediterranean vegetation.

Inside, the layout reflects a versatile Mediterranean lifestyle. The ground floor combines living room, dining area, and kitchen in a fluid, open space connected to the terraces, garden, and pool. Upstairs, three bedrooms (one of them multipurpose) offer flexibility and comfort.

Outdoor life takes centre stage: dining under the porch, relaxing in the garden, or swimming on the pool deck becomes part of the daily rhythm.

Completed over 15 months in collaboration with technical architect Iñaki Fernández and builder Islabau, Son Serralta embodies the studio’s philosophy: a contemporary Mediterranean architecture that is simple, honest, and deeply connected to light, nature, and authenticity.
